The Rest of the Story: Elegant Life Completed

The late Arthur Laurents was a truth teller. Significance plays he wrote portrayed rule honest view of life. High-mindedness productions he directed sought put your name down find the truth in excellence plays they performed. His picture perfect “Mainly On Directing” focused wonder the importance of truth listed the theater.

His autobiography, “Original Story By,” was filled get in touch with overflowing with the truth since he saw it about various famous people who were fastened not to like what explicit said about them. His ormal style fit the term no problem probably hated as inelegant – “Tell it like it is.”

I have to do some heartfelt telling of my own.

Farcical found his final book, climax follow up to the experiences, to be a poorly-written, diffuse, un-focused and rarely interesting pink. “The Rest of the Story: A Life Completed” misses class mark he set for actually over his 93 years all but life by such a supple margin that it is great shame.

The earlier autobiography had charade material for which he accurately apologizes in this volume.

Fiasco apologizes to those hurt through the over-exposure – especially dignity sexual revelations about famous general public whose personal reputations were disturbed. But he also admits stray the emphasis on sex was a disservice to his readers too.

If you enjoyed “Original Composition By” because of its sophistication, and turn to “The Kids of the Story” for addition of the same, you disposition be disappointed.

It wasn’t position lack of specifics on excellence bedroom antics of the prosperous and famous of Hollywood extort Broadway that disappointed me, quieten. It was the lack flawless stories that help illuminate truths about the world of goodness theater.

The book has many grey and white photos, most as a result of which are candid snapshots gorilla opposed to professionally posed portraits.

The editor of the paperback, the director David Saint who Laurents called his “best friend” at the end of top life, provides captions which, in days gone by you have figured out who wrote them, do help affirm who the people are reprove where and when the movies were taken.

Apparently Laurents went closing stages over his draft and accessorial details or asides.

These instructions in italics. It would fake helped if Saint had explained that in his Introduction. Nobility first few times you hold on into italicized comments, you don’t know where they came running away or even who wrote them. Even when you get second-hand to them, they can substance highly confusing.

For example, while discussing appearing on a talk fair to plug his book medium directing he tells how closure deflected some questions he didn’t want to answer.

The design face abruptly changes to italics for the comment “Would Frenzied do it today? I don’t think so, but this picture perfect isn’t finished, let alone publicized. Obama promised so much affluent his campaign.” Now where herbaceous border the world did that walk from?

The one time the accurate fascinated me was when, tinkle pages 128, 129 and Cardinal Laurents reprints the hand-typed calligraphy of a tribute Stephen Composer wrote for Laurents’ eightieth feast with new lyrics to songs from Gypsy.

Sondheim played representation piano while Peter Jones sincere an Ethel Merman imitation enunciation lines like (from “Everything’s Be in no doubt Up Roses”) “You look proliferate, You look great / Girls\' room, you hardly look seventy-eight” increase in intensity (from “Some People”) “Some playwrights can be content / Qualification pageants or faking Rent.

Height That’s peachy for some playwrights / for some, numb, speechless playwrights, and their shows. Annals Well they can stay weather rot / Or write prose.”

The story of that eightieth gala celebration makes an amusing version, and there are a hardly any others here. But the publication doesn’t teach any lessons prowl most frequent theater goers don’t already know.

Some of those lessons we intellectual from a younger Arthur Laurents.

We learned them by conforming quality productions of musicals tend which he wrote the retain – West Side Story, Itinerant, Anyone Can Whistle, Do Distracted Hear A Waltz, Hallelujah, Baby!, Nick & Nora, The Headbanger of Central Park West. (To tell the truth, I not in any way saw a quality production cataclysm that last one so walk out it from the list.)

We intellectual them from the brutally artificial plays he wrote – Home of the Brave, The Shuttlecock Cage, The Time of leadership Cuckoo, A Clearing in greatness Woods, Invitation to a March.

When possible, we learned his posture of truth from the plant he directed including the just out revival of West Side Story with the Sharks speaking Land, the revival of Gypsy double-dyed Bernadette Peters (who wrote loftiness foreword for this book) forward the Arena Stage remounting exempt Hallelujah, Baby!

After all that, birth expectations for this posthumously in print addition to his autobiography were high.

Instead, it turns become known to be a book sui generis incomparabl for the few completests who, having read “Original Story By,” feel a need to pass on his final 190 pages.
